The NutHouse, Inc.
The name goes back to a simple beginning.. a good old-fashioned bulletin board
(or BBS as we called them) which accepted its first call on January 1, 1994. We called it
"The NutHouse" and the opening screen showed an "ANSI" drawing of a
rather worn-out clapboard outhouse, complete with crescent moon carved on the door. A
cartoon-style balloon coming from inside the building carried the caption: "Squirrel
sez... Be an adult, not a kid. Hit the toilet, not the lid". And there you have it.
The mood was set for a BBS devoted to a slightly tongue-in-cheek brand of humor and a
place to kick back and have some fun.
How do you connect a "nuthouse" with an "outhouse"? Well, look closely
at the two words. You guessed it! The guy who did the drawing couldn't read
our handwriting and so our beloved Squirrel spent her early years living in an old
outhouse instead of the oak tree we had originally envisioned. Hey, it was a really cute
outhouse! Kinda reminded us of our old homestead in Kentucky....
A year later, the Internet was becoming the preferred technology and so began
our evolution. Our earliest "residents" were, of course, our BBS
subscribers. They voted unanimously to keep the name they were used to, and
so the old NutHouse BBS became.... The NutHouse On-Line.
And now it has come time for another change. Our beloved
Squirrel has retired (more or less) and the company is officially being
run by her son and his wife. Edna still answers the phone and does the
customer support, but the actual day to day routines and responsibilities
are no longer hers. This gives her the opportunity to enjoy time with the
grandkids and her gardening. You can visit Edna at her new homes on the
web, SW Florida Gardening and Dummy
Gardening - You Can Grow It where she writes about her gardening
experiences.
